The West African Payment Challenge: Why The Gambia?

West Africa represents one of the world’s most dynamic emerging markets, driven by a young, tech-savvy population and a rapid expansion of local trade and entrepreneurship. However, cross-border commerce across the region has long been constrained by legacy banking infrastructure:

  • High Cost & Delay: Traditional intra-regional and international payments often take 3 to 5 business days to clear, incurring average fee rates of 7% to 10%+ in FX conversions and intermediary bank charges.
  • Heavy Remittance Dependency: In The Gambia, international remittances account for over 20% of national GDP—making accessible, low-cost cross-border transfer rails vital to local economic stability and business growth.
  • Currency Fragmentation: Managing multiple currencies across West Africa (such as the Gambian Dalasi, Nigerian Naira, Ghanaian Cedi, and CFA Franc) creates significant foreign exchange volatility and liquidity management challenges for businesses engaged in international trade.

By establishing a operational anchor in The Gambia, AllScale and WanPay aim to bridge these gaps, offering local enterprises direct, compliant access to global payment networks and digital dollar liquidity.

Combining Strengths: How the Infrastructure Works

This strategic collaboration leverages the complementary technical and market capabilities of both platforms to build an end-to-end payment ecosystem:

  • AllScale's Global Infrastructure: Providing self-custody neobanking tech stacks, enterprise-grade stablecoin rails (USDC/USDT), compliance frameworks, and global liquidity integration.
  • WanPay's Regional Payment Network: Utilizing deep local expertise, regulatory relationships, and established local fiat on-ramp/off-ramp rails, including bank clearing networks and mobile money systems across West Africa.

Practical Impact for Local Businesses

Together, the combined solution enables West African merchants, trade firms, and platforms to:

  1. Receive Global Payments Instantly: Accept funds from international buyers via compliant stablecoin rails, settling in seconds rather than days.
  2. Mitigate FX Volatility: Hold value in digital dollars or settle directly into local fiat via WanPay's regional network.
  3. Lower Transaction Costs: Significantly reduce settlement overhead compared to traditional correspondent banking channels.

Key Areas of Strategic Collaboration

Under the agreement, AllScale and WanPay will work together across four core pillars:

  1. Regional Payment Network Expansion: Co-developing localized payment clearing networks across The Gambia and neighboring West African markets.
  2. Cross-Border Remittances & Collections: Streamlining B2B import/export settlements, supplier payouts, and consumer remittance flows.
  3. Merchant Acquisition & Enablement: Equipping local trade companies and digital platforms with seamless checkout and payout tools.
  4. Compliance & Regulatory Alignment: Maintaining joint compliance mechanisms, AML/KYC standards, and working closely with local monetary authorities to ensure fully compliant operations.

Executive Perspective

"West Africa presents enormous economic potential, and building seamless financial connectivity is the key to unlocking it. With The Gambia as our regional connection point, our partnership with WanPay combines AllScale’s compliant stablecoin and neobanking infrastructure with WanPay’s deep local payment networks. Together, we are building safer, faster, and lower-cost financial bridges for African enterprises."
Leo Wang, Co-Founder & COO of AllScale

Looking Ahead

Following the signing, AllScale and WanPay have established a joint working committee and regular communication channels to execute on the technical integrations and regulatory filings. The first phase of rollout will focus on launching compliant merchant collection and settlement services in The Gambia, with expansion into broader West African markets to follow.
